In this podcast, ‘Over de Liefde’ (in Dutch), cultural sociologist Samira van Bohemen joins Debbie Gerritsen to talk about why pornography remains one of the last big social taboos, despite being a major part of many people’s sexual lives. Drawing on her research, she explains how our porn preferences often reflect social norms and stereotypes we’ve learned from an early age, shaped by family, peers, and media. These preferences aren’t fixed: as society changes, so do the clichés in porn. And while certain fantasies – like the rise of “stepfamily” scenarios – may break social taboos on screen, they don’t necessarily reflect what people want in their real-life sex lives.
