Have you ever wondered what the porn you watch says about you and the society we live in? Every day, hundreds of millions of people watch pornography as an enjoyable activity. Yet, online porn is rife with stereotypes related to gender and race/ethnicity. From the ‘MILF’ to the ‘Slutty Schoolgirl’ and the ‘BBC’. Why do so many of us find pleasure in these stereotypes? Ever heard the joke that the internet was made for only two things: porn and cat videos? Well, there’s some truth to it. Watching porn is one of people’s most frequent pastimes online. According to statistics from market research bureau Statista, in 2023, the three most popular adult entertainment websites—Pornhub, Xvideos, and Xnxx.com—accounted for more than 754 million visits per day, amounting to a whopping 22.64 billion visits per month! Pornhub alone is the fourth most visited website overall, topped only by Google, YouTube, and Facebook.
Given these staggering numbers, porn consumption is a massive part of human behavior and sexuality, deserving of academic scrutiny.
